The Oldest Chemist Shop in England
Knaresborough

The oldest chemist shop in England; established 1720, is situated at the heart of Knaresborough Market Place. The shop; a listed building, is full of charm and old world character.

The shop is famous for it's old drawers, some of which still hold original crystals and powders. A dog-spit mortar still stands in the corner alongside the 'bleeding couch' where leeches were used to draw infection from open wounds. In more recent times, people still remember the Chemist puling teeth from suffers sitting on the couch.

Today the shop belongs to John Farrah - Harrogate Toffee, and carries our full range of confectionary products as well as chocolates, and coffee, ground on the premises.

The chemist's history is not forgotten with world famous Lavender Water still available, complemented by a selection of exclusive gifts.
